*This story was born from a meme and not to be taken seriously. It’s just humor.

“Why would you do that, huh?” He tossed his hands in the air. “Were you not paying attention?” A seething bout of anger and betrayal built up inside him.

“Is it really that big of a deal? It’s only a game? There’ll be more games. As a matter of fact, there’s a game tomorrow night.” Her voice was low and steady, yet her body lingered on the defensive. Folded arms and intense brows gave her away.

A deep sigh escaped his lips, and he scratched the back of his neck, struggling to keep his temper to a minimum. “It’s not ONLY a game, it was the game before the playoffs. A big game, and I needed to see it. That’s why I was recording it.”

“I mean, you know the outcome,” she threw her shoulders up, “why does it matter if you see the game?” Her posture was stoic, watching him with intense eyes, waiting for an answer.

Air filled his lungs, and he breathed out, causing a rush of it to flow in her direction. His eyebrows lowered; lips pursed with stiff jaws. “Because I need to see what happened, play-by-play. Every fumble, every touchdown, every yard ran must rest in my mind’s eye. I need to see the mistakes and the victories and how it led to the end results. It’s necessary for me.” He pounded his chest with an open palm as the last two words came spilling out.

At that moment, her eyes would’ve rolled out of her head if they could. The semantics of football, or any sport, were not significant to her. “I guess.”

“You guess?” He paused, taking in the words. “Ha! You women will never understand.” Those words sat idled in his throat for a while, yet the pain of regret moved in his stomach after letting them free.

Her lips puckered, and she cocked her head, turning towards the TV, where a black screen captured their reflections. She twisted and stared deep into his eyes; arms still folded. “Calm down, baby girl. Sounds like you need a nap.” Her lips twisted when the words came spewing out like acid.

In a matter of seconds, his expression changed from annoyance to confusion. Every muscle in his face slipped to his throat, rendering him speechless. His eyes scanned the room, trying to focus on something, anything, but couldn’t settle his attention on nothing but those words which pierced his gut. A glaring of delight stretched across her face. Stomach-churning, he rolled his eyes and spun on his heels, scoffing, and stomping away like a bratty child.

Before entering the door to the home office, he stopped, peering back at the woman who, yesterday, made his heart sing. And she greeted him with a taunting grin, reaching from ear to ear. The words brought a menacing joy to her heart. He shook his head, stepped into the office, and slammed the door.

Silence blanketed the condo throughout the rest of the night. Dinner felt like a quiet battle between alpha and beta. Every so often, he’d pop his head up, making sharp eye contact before going back to eating his meal. Despite the spiteful glares, she remained unbothered and enjoyed the scrumptious feast she’d prepared.

Bedtime rolled around and his head sunk halfway underneath the covers, watching her sashay from the bathroom to the closet. She hopped on the bed and kissed him on the forehead, gingerly patting the top of his head.

“Goodnight.” she said, rolling over and setting her head on the feathery pillow that would bring sweet dreams.

He grimaced and said nothing, eyes shooting daggers in the back of her head.

She slept like a newborn baby, fresh out of their mother’s womb.

Yeah, he regretted it.
